The Townships Project

We are proud to share that an impactful Early Childhood Development (ECD) training initiative in South Africa has now been successfully completed by the dedicated Martha Deacon.

This innovative programme was carefully designed to train two women from each ECD centre over a four-month period—ensuring that centres could remain open while staff members took turns attending training. Each participant attended one week of training, then returned to the centre so their colleague could attend the following week. This thoughtful rotation meant that children continued to receive care while both educators were empowered with vital knowledge and skills.

The programme has already been successfully developed and implemented in Alexandra Township, Soweto, and Mathibestad, with over 100 individuals from 42 centres trained in Mathibestad I alone—far exceeding original expectations.

This success would not have been possible without the foundational support of The Townships Project, a Canadian-registered charity, and the Charlottetown Rotary Club, who have been instrumental in funding various phases of the training.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Martha Deacon for her exceptional leadership and care in completing this important work. Her commitment is making a lasting difference in the lives of children, families, and communities.
